I don't have much patience for anonymous commenters. If you can't be bothered to identify yourself, I can't be bothered to respond. I deleted one comment on my Hunter S. Thompson post because it was a flame -- rude and incendiary. I've left the second, more thoughtful comment. I don't have time right now to get into an argument. Really. I don't have time. I will only point out that I said he was MY hero. I never said he had to be yours. And I will leave you with this, which was for many, many years, my favorite quote. It no longer is, because I no longer need it.
"He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man." --Dr. Johnson

Hey I'm with ya Patia! Tell 'em!
I am confused. This whole web blog thing lends itself to anonymity. I am not arguing, just making an observation. Your site does not say you don't want anononymous commenters, and yet you offer people the option of being anonymous. I am not arguing just making an observation. Isn't Monkey being anonymous? Just wondering out loud, you don't have to answer, if you don't have the time. I thought when you flamed someone you wrote IN UPPER CASE. For other people wondering I did no such thing. I asked a question, and I made a comment. I was not being argumentative about your choice of heroes. I loved reading HST. His first book was his best. His coverage of the 1972 presedential campaign was hilarous. What he thought fed his gift, drugs & alcohol, is what killed it. Read my second post carefully, it says the same thing that I said the first time.
I forgot my quote. I can't remember who said it, I think Chekhov. An unexamined life is a life not worth living.
I'm not anonymous, yay!!! And HST is one of my heros, too, dead or alive, that man knew how to express the things we barely dared think. Good for him for pushing his own private hell envelop, may we all live full lives like that. Big hugs to you, sweetie.
Anonymous -- I'm glad you shared your confusion. Here's my take on the questions you asked:
-My site doesn't say I don't want anonymous commenters, largely because a) I haven't taken the time to create a site policy, and b) it hasn't been an issue until now.
-My Blogger settings allow anonymous postings simply because I trust people to be decent.
-Monkey IS sort of anonymous; however, he does have a username and account with Blogger, and I could track him down if I needed to.
-Actually, I could probably track YOU down if I needed to, because Blogger undoubtedly records your computer's unique IP address. But don't worry, I (and probably Blogger) would only pursue this route in situations of extreme harassment.
-Sure, blogging lends itself to anonymity, but there's sort of an unwritten code of conduct that people should at least identify themselves by a username/nickname. Some people refer to this code as "netiquette."
-UPPER CASE is considered "shouting"; flames are posts that are accusatory, hateful or otherwise rude.
That's all I have time for right now. Thanks for being civil in your followup comments.
