I write to imagine things differently and in imagining things differently perhaps the world will change. I write to honor beauty. I write to correspond with my friends. I write as a daily act of improvisation.
This is a golden age for Engrish in many places as striving regions get a little ahead of themselves with the new "Lingua Fanca" (Lingua Engua?). When I was in Istanbul last year I saw many instances, my favorite being the sign over a carpet stall near the Blue Mosque that reads "Sorry, We're Open"
I think it's fascinating how cultures appropriate other languages as design elements. For example, today I wore a velvet scarf that is decorated with Chinese (I think) characters. Beautiful -- but I have absolutely no idea what it says. And think of all the Americans with tattoos of Asian characters and symbols. Probably Asians have their own versions of the Engrish web site, and sit around and laugh at us!
