Lids or no lids, Patia? The Quill office supplies catalog has re-filing bins that are metal but they have no lids. If they don't have to be square, lard pails with tops are good -- but lard is "trans-fat" so they may have disappeared off the map. A good solid plastic bin of some heft and size keeps the mice out of my out-of-season clothes.
They do need to be square, to fit in my 14-inch, wire mesh stacking cubes. I'm guessing that metal is the only surface mice won't be able to shinny up.

Watch out for mothballs. They can be poisonous.
