A Drivel Runs Through It

Inspired by Jen and Justin.
- Life. In light of the many people around the world whose lives have ended far too prematurely, I am grateful for my relatively safe and uneventful existence thus far. (Knock wood.)
- Health. As I grow older, I have begun to take my good health less for granted. Since birth, I have been blessed with a strong, healthy body -- although I am increasingly aware that my weight and bad habits are going to catch up with me sooner or later if I don't get my act together.
- Friends. Who would we be without friends? My friends have given me a place in the world. They have loved, supported, encouraged, comforted and entertained me. Friends come and go, but whether long or short, casual or intense, friendship is a true gift.
- Beauty. In the midst of all the struggle and suffering in the world, beauty brings joy to the heart. There are so many kinds of beauty -- among them nature, humanity, art, words, design, emotion -- and each offers its own kind of redemption.
- Clean water. So often as I drink a cold, pure glass of spring water or take a delicious hot shower or wash dishes in the sink, I think how fortunate I am to have an abundant supply of clean water. My fervent wish is that humans protect and preserve our lifeblood -- water.

I found this sticker in a store downtown; I'm pretty sure it's locally made. I bought it for a male friend who I think exemplifies the concept.
Mantastic. [man-ta'stik]
adj. beyond patriarchy. men in an evolved state of being, in balance with their inner feminine and masculine attributes.
As a helpful aside, did you know you can type "define:word" into Google and it will return multiple definitions? Results are pulled from all over the Web, so they aren't exactly definitive, but useful nonetheless.
I tried "define:mantastic." Nothing. Yet.

The latest issue of the Montanan magazine has an article I wrote about Susan Gibson, who penned the Dixie Chicks song "Wide Open Spaces" while she was a student at UM.The story of this song's journey from Susan Gibson's freshman journal to No. 1 hit song -- and title track for the best-selling country music album ever -- is fascinating and a little bit magical.
"Wide Open Spaces" was inspired, in part, by Gibson's childhood trips to her grandparents' home on Montana's Flathead Lake.
(The photograph of the road in the story is one of mine, too -- it was taken at Camas Prairie, one of my favorite places on earth.)

I have five freelance jobs to get done. (Yay, money!)
I am also determined to finish my website redesign, dig out my email inbox and go for a walk or otherwise exercise every day.

So, unless you're offering money, a lucrative assignment, compliments or encouragement, please leave me alone until I come up for air, probably in a week or two.
Thanks!
